Curatorial Comments	Aniline dyes (mentioned in this recipe book), successfully synthetized beginning in 1856, were a family of triphenylmethane colours. They were bright, colour fast and much cheaper than organic dyes such as indigo or logwood. Vegetable ivory, because of its porosity, absorbed dyes readily, and buttons were made in a variety of bright colours.
