Notes  Peter Reist, "the pioneer of this numerous family, was born in Switzerland about the year 1700. During the early days of his boyhood, religious persecutions were carried on most severely against all nonconformists. When twenty years of age he fled to the Palatinate for shelter. Here he remained three years, working at his trade (linen weaving). While at the Palatinate he formed an acquaintance with Anna Clara Boyer whom he married in 1723. Soon after their marriage they emigrated to America and settled in Penn Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he built for himself and wife a small cabin near Kissel Hill, but the land on which it was built was claimed by one named Witmer. He relinquished possession of this and went about two miles north-west where he took possession of six hundred acres of land; two hundred acres of this tract are still in possession of John and Jacob Reist, great-great-grandsons of the first old settler. Mr. Reist's family consisted of seven children, viz:"
