Notes  Peter Hammacher, "the forefather of this family, was a native of Wurtenburg, Germany, where he was born probably as early as 1735. We find that in 1763 he emigrated to America and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he died aged about sixty years. It cannot be ascertained to whom he was married, but we know that his family consisted of twelve children. It is doubtful whether they all attained the age of twenty-one years, as the oldest members in the family never knew of more than eight, namely:....Quite likely the remaining four died quite young.(It was not customary in olden times to give names to children until several months old and if one died ere it was named, it was seldom registered, and such is supposed to have been the case with the above family)"
