Description
An all-wool handwoven winter sheet in natural wool and yellow ochre woven approximately 36 inches wide and seamed in the centre. It is hemmed at both ends. It is a small windowpane check balanced in warp and weft.
Provenance
The winter sheet is associated with Barbara Hagey and was likely used in her household. Such sheets were used by the Pennsylvania Germans singly - "a one-sheet bed" - with comforters or feather bed. They served also as light blankets for summer use. Generally, they were sold in pairs by local weavers. The two-sheet English-style bed was generally adopted by the Pennsylvania Germans in Waterloo County during the course of the second half of the nineteenth century.
