Description	A small black softcover lined notebook. First page title reads "A. Coppy from the Dyer Cleason Oberholtzer Book, ... Berlin Ont. / November 14th 1892 ..." Written in ballpoint ink at foot of first page: Comp. Gross Dom Buttons. The notebook contains detailed handwritten instructions for mixing dye ingredients.

Curatorial Comments	Cleason Oberholtzer (b. 1866) got his start in business working for a small button factory owned by Samuel Moyer, a former employee of the Shantz Button Manufacturing Company. He later worked in other lines of local manufacturing and according to Moyer "died quite young and quite wealthy." His recipes for colouring vegetable ivory buttons were possibly derived from experience or were handed down by word of mouth from others in the business. In this notebook, his notes have been transcribed by David Gross, who in 1912, assumed ownership of J.Y. Shantz & Son Co. Ltd. Logwood, mentioned in these recipes, was a stain or dye derived from the reddish-brown heartwood of the Logwood tree (Haematoxylon campechianum) imported from Central America.
