Description
White woven linen show towel. Decorative motifs include: 3-flower tree, 8-pointed stars, 5-flower tulip tree, geometric patterns, the date "1834", the names "Elizabeth Shantz" (enclosed in a cross-stitch box) and "ELISABETH SHANTZ". Red and blue designs worked in cross-stitch. The bottom two-thirds of the material are plain.
Provenance
Elisabeth is the second daughter of Abraham Shantz, from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Abraham is the grandson of Jacob Shantz who migrated from Switzerland via Holland -summer 1737- (son of Isaac). Elisabeth Shantz born October 16, 1811. Married, May 20, 1828 to Jonas Ziegler, died June 28, 1886 at the age of 75. Jonas and Elizabeth had 12 children of whom eight survived. Elizabeth had 23 years of childbirth. She made this towel between the births of Magdalena, born 1833 and Jonas, born 1835. Mary, born 1830 was 4-years old running around the house.
