Early: 1880 - Late: 1890
Description
Surveyor's chain with steel wire links, connected by wire loops at each end. Every 10 ft. there is a copper alloy tally tag, with a particular number of notches in it (2 notches at 20 ft., 3 notches at 30 ft., etc.). The tag at the middle is stamped "Chesterman, Sheffield Engl." At the ends of the chain, there are copper allo (brass) handles, each stamped "100 F." When the chain is not in use, the links are held on a lengthy wire, hooked at the end. The surveyor's chain would be used to measure linear distances.
