Description
A cabinet studio portrait mounted on dark green card with a serrated bevelled gold edge. Printed across the bottom in gold lettering is: Esson's/ Portraits/ Preston, Ont. Printed on the back in black is a border of trees, an angel holding a mirror, and the words: From the / Elite/ Photographic Studio,/ 113 Queen St. Preston, Ont./ James Esson, Artist./ Large photos. a specialty./ Also life-size portraits in crayon, India ink, or/ water colours./ Engagements can be made for Photographing/ Groups, Private Theatricals, Fancy Dress Parties,/ Weddings, &c., &c.,/ at your own homes any time of day or night. Handwritten in black marker on the back is: Angelina Louise Tyson Bowman; and in pencil: Angelina Louise Bowman. It is a head-and-shoulders shot of an older woman wearing a black bodice with contrast black floral print fabric at centre front and shoulder frills. The bodice is close fitting and made to look like a jacket front with lapels and a stand collar. The long sleeves are close fitting with a gathered shoulder frill. The centre front section is gathered through the upper half and has a gathered surplice bottom section. Her hair is parted in the centre and pulled to the back with a loose bun on the top of her head. She has a brooch at the centre of her collar and drop earrings. The photographer's dates are 1875-1900. The bodice dates the print to c. 1887-1890.
