Most individual squares were pieced by machine but joined together by hand using a backstitch. Most squares and two opposite borders are of red and white striped cotton and a purple floral cotton. Three squares in one corner are in a different red and white floral and purple floral prints. Two remaining borders are two different floral prints in red and white, purple, and black. Fabric designs are similar to those of the second and third quarters of the 19th century, i.e., circa 1850. Some parts of the quilt are roughly pieced, with distortion and puckering and small scraps inserted to complete a square. Kitchener 519-748-1914 www.region.waterloo.on.ca/doon Accession No. 1977.061.007 Curatorial Comments Not all quilts get finished, and not all quilts ar perfect works of art, but there can be a vigorous charm in imperfections: of these 25 blocks, three are different in colour from the rest, and 14 enclose motifs smaller than the others, which are enlarged by strips and then randomly oriented in an orthogonal grid. The blocks are pressed into order by sashes (sets) and then bordered by a bold anf cheerfully inconsistent Sawtooth Pattern. The combination of red striped (or red-figured) and blue-violet (variously figured) cottons creates a strong colour resonance and imposes order despite the small variations.
