Description
A handcrafted hanging clock shelf constructed out of pine and finished in dark green paint. Top cornice molding is cut in a picket design. A centre opening for the clock to sit is flagged by two shelf openings. Below these shelves is a longer shelf that would have held family adornments. The bottom skirt has two carved shelf brackets supporting the lower shelf. These brackets are carved with two concentric triangles on the sides. The front of the brackets are adorned with a decorative dental pattern. The centre of the bottom skirt has a carved six point compass star in the centre flanked by tulips and circular carvings.
Maker\Attribution
Attributed to William K. Eby
Provenance
The shelf was found in the 1970s still mounted on a kitchen wall in New Hamburg, (Ontario, Canada) where it had hung for more than a century. The fanciful treatment of the top, with its strong Gothic mouldings, is balanced by traditional Germanic decorations. This clock shelf is attributed to maker William K. Eby of Conestoga in Waterloo, County (Ontario, Canada). This artifact is nationally certified under the Canadian Harvest Collection, Part II, acquired by the Museum in 1986. It is part of a superb collection of Germanic folk and decorative arts from Waterloo Region, Ontario, the Maritime and Western Provinces.
