Description	A painted drawing of two birds perched on the bough of an apple tree made for Joseph D. Bauman's granddaughter, Lovina Bauman. The German text below the drawing states that it was made in 1883.

Curatorial Comments	The drawing was done for Lovina Bauman, who was Joseph D. Bauman's (1815-1889) granddaughter. Her father, Seth B. Bauman, and family resided with Joseph on his farm. The Bauman family comes from Berks County, Pennsylvania, but Joseph was born near Waterloo and farmed near St. Jacobs. Several bookplates, family records and pictorial drawings are attributed to him, and it appears that he was most active during the 1860's. His work is similar to that of Abraham Latschaw and Isaac Z. Hunsicker. He retained some elements from both of these early Fraktur artists, but he also copied motifs from printed forms. Bauman produced many drawings of trees and birds for children and grandchildren, with simple texts, as well as many family records which he lettered and embellished with geometric designs. This drawing of birds (Stieglitz) is a lift from a G.S. Peters or similar printed certificate which served to inspire Bauman's copy skills in other examples of his work. Bauman liked to select details from printed forms and to make them into pictures unto themselves. In this instance, he borrowed not only the subject matter but also the use of red and yellow.
