Description	Although this small fraktur drawing and text is a birth record, it might also be regarded as a presentation piece on the occasion of the recipient's fifth birthday. The last line of the text indicates that it was finished and given as a gift (geschenkt) in 1881. The source for the paired birds and floral sprig was undoubtedly an earlier Pennsylvania printed form such as the Taufschein produced by Bauman and Ruth at Ephrata. The Fraktur is drawn inside a series of borders which are from the outside in: a thin red line, a thick black line, a thin red line, and a series of connected red and blue triangles. There are blue, red and yellow flowers in each top corner, and in the middle section, a pair of orange, blue, red and green birds (peacocks) perched on branches of a plant. The plant is made up of two large feathery leaves with a large flower growing out of the centre. Below the plant is written the birth record, with the name painted in blue, red and yellow, and the rest of the text in black. Written in German script, it reads: "Daniel Horst,/ wurde Geboren. am 4 ten August./ Im Jahr 1876. in Canada West./ Versertigt and geschenkt, im Jahr 1881".

Provenance	The recipient of the fraktur, Daniel Horst (b. 1876), was a younger brother of Waterloo County woodcarver David B. Horst (1873-1965). The Bauman family roots were in Berks County, Pennsylvania, but Joseph D. Bauman was born near Waterloo, Ontario and farmed near St. Jacobs.

Curatorial Comments	Several bookplates, family records and pictorial drawings are attributed to Joseph D. Bauman, and it appears that most of his work was done later than the 1860's. His work is similar to that of Abraham Latschaw and Isaac Z. Hunsicker. He retained some elements from both of these early Fraktur artists, but he also copied motifs from printed forms. Bauman produced many drawings of trees and birds for children and grandchildren, with simple texts, as well as many family records which he lettered and embellished with geometric designs.
